Vitamin B12

Did you know that Vitamin B12 is one of the few essential vitamins that our body doesn’t produce on its own? It is unique in that it is the only vitamin that contains an essential mineral – namely, cobalt also is thereby needed for B12 production. Vitamin B12 is part of the vitamin B complex, which includes thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, and folate. Each of these vitamins has its own unique role in the body, but most B vitamins have a role in helping your body's cells to produce energy.

B12 is found in many of the foods we eat and is vital to a person’s health, but unfortunately it is not something we instinctively have. B12 deficiencies are most commonly linked to dietary habits, age and problems with absorption. Vitamin B12 increases energy, red blood cell production, immune function, metabolism, mental clarity and mood. With a wide range of health benefits, it is necessary for the body to function properly. According to Harvard Health, both male and female adults should intake at least 2.4 mcg of B12 per day. Pregnant or breastfeeding teens and women need more: 2.6 to 2.8 mcg daily.

B12 naturally occurs in food sources from animals like meat and dairy. As a result of this, many people with a strict vegan or vegetarian diet are likely to have a deficiency. B12 deficiencies can also be caused from problems with food absorption and stomach acid production. These issues can stem from weight-loss surgeries, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, heartburn medication, and old age. Signs and symptoms of B12 deficiency may include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the hands, legs, or feet

  • Balance problems

  • Anemia

  • A swollen, inflamed tongue

  • Difficulty thinking and reasoning (cognitive difficulties), or memory loss

  • Intestinal problems

  • Fatigue

  • Constipation

Fortunately, these deficiencies can be replenished by B12 injections.
